The Life of Apostle John: A Journey of Faith and Revelation
by Elder Willie Foster
WestBow Press
book review by Kat Kennedy
“John’s relationship with Jesus was marked by a profound intimacy, both earthly and spiritual.”
This study of the Apostle John covers John’s parentage, childhood education, discipleship with Jesus, witness to Christ’s resurrection from the dead, John’s ministry, and his exile to Patmos. The author provides an in-depth discussion about the nature of John’s writing. “John’s gospel is distinctly different from the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) for its theological depth, keen outlook, and emphasis on the divinity of Jesus.” The author discusses the focus of John’s gospel, his epistles, and his prophetic writing, Revelation. Short bios of the disciples and information on the symbolism of Revelation are also included. The teachings of John and the visions he experiences on Patmos are further presented as lessons relating John’s writings to contemporary life and providing guidance for modern readers. A timeline of John’s life and a list of additional resources are also provided.
In this look at the Apostle John, the author offers unique insights into both John’s life and his special relationship with Jesus. One of the most interesting parts of the book concerns this close relationship. “John’s close bond with Jesus transformed him into a devoted witness of Christ’s love, truth, and divinity.” This bond is what ultimately influences John to provide the “model for Christian spirituality centered on a personal and intimate relationship with God.” Foster’s conversational writing renders more difficult information accessible. His discussion concerning Revelation and its symbolism is easy to understand. Foster offers plenty here to fully educate readers on the subject. He also provides thought-provoking guided discussions for those wishing to delve deeper into the text, whether alone or in a group study setting. This short but thorough book offers all one requires for a study of the Apostle John’s life and writings.
